Podophyllum hexandrum Royle of family Berberidaceae is an endangered medicinal plant. Rhizome of P.hexandrum contains several lignans which posses antitumor activity. Podphyllotoxin is the most active cytotoxic natural product. It is used as starting compound for the synthesis of anticancer drug etoposide and teniposide. Podophyllotoxin acts as an inhibitor of microtubule assembly. These drugs are used for lung cancer, testicular cancer, neuroblastoma, hepatoma and other tumors. more...
Medicinal plants are being used for therapeutic purposes since the dawn of human civilization. The therapeutic efficacy of medicinal plants is due to the presence of wide range phytochemical constituents or secondary metabolites. The medicinal plants are traditionally used for several types of ailments. Even in those pathological conditions where other methods of treatment fail to work. Curcuma longa Linn is very common ingredient used as spice in foods as preservative and coloring material in different part of the world. It has been used as a home remedy for a variety of diseases. Curcuma longa and its isolated constituent curcumin are widely evaluated for anticancer activity. Curcumin possesses broad remedial potential due to its multi-targeting effect against many different carcinoma including leukemia, genitourinary cancers, gastrointestinal cancers and breast cancer etc. Hence, Curcumin has potential for the development of new medicine for the treatment of several diseases.more...

In modern world, cancer is a leading cause of death. Cancer treatment options such as surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy are costly, have serious side effects and residual morbidity. It has been found that ethanolic extract of Tulsi produces a reduction in tumor size and an increase in the life expectancy of mice that have Sarcoma-180 solid tumors. This result has also been demonstrated by anticancer activity of Ocimum sanctum in Lewis lung carcinoma animal model. Ursolic acid has anticancer property. O. sanctum provides a protective effect on DNA from harmful radiations. O. sanctum is significantly useful against a variety tumor genesis states. The administration of aqueous and alcoholic extracts of O. sanctum to mice having Solid Sarcoma-180 tumors leads to a considerable reduction in tumor size. Tulsi extract also has an anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging potential which also play a crucial role in reducing certain type of cancerous cell growth. Ursolic acid and Curcumin isolated from Tulsi has an anti-inflammatory, cyclooxygenase inhibitory and antioxidant activity. O. sanctum increases the production and storage of glutathione and produces an increase in glutathione-S-transferase activity by approximately 78% in mice. In Dalton Lymphoma ascites tumor model in Swiss, the chemo preventive effect and anti-tumor growth of O. sanctum L., were observed in Albino mice. The crude herb ingestion leads to an increase in the survival time and produces a reduction in the peritoneal ascetic fluid in a DMBA induced rat hepatocyte. There was dose dependent decrease in the levels of DMBA-DNA by using extract. It is stated that O. sanctum leaf extract produces a reduction in chemical carcinogenesis through the metabolic activation pathway inhibition in the carcinogen seed [36]. Oil of O. sanctum is effective as a chemo preventive agent against the development of fibro sarcoma in Swiss albino mice induced through a subcutaneously injected 20-methylcholanthrene. This produces an increase in the survival rate and delay in tumor incidence when administered to mice. The end product lipid peroxidation and Liver enzymatic and malondialdehyde levels were considerably altered when oil was given to mice as compared to untreated mice that had been injected with 20-methylcholanthrene. The chemo preventive potential is thus, due to the antioxidant properties and produces a considerable reduction in tumor size. In rats, the radio-protective effect was studied stated by administration on the salivary glands and the activity was compared with a radio protectant, amifostinepre. O. sanctum and amifostinepre-supplemented and consequently given to rats for 3 and 6 months with positive results on high dose . Alcoholic root extract of tulsi is also effective against lung carcinoma cells.more...
Used in traditionally medicine for centuries, all parts of this handsome, fast growing tree have show significant ability to treat certain forms of cancer & its currently being researched for applications in HIV/AIDS treatment.
A large well-shaped deciduous tree, a Happy Tree is native to China & Tibet & often used in Japan as a shade tree.
Attractive, large, lush rich green leaves with deep veining are oval shaped, tapering to a point. In summer, it bears small, creamy white flowers in rounded heads followed by curious fruit. Grows super fast in warm humid zones. Grow in sun & humus-rich soil. Doesn't like to dry out.

Colchicum species, which are widely used as medication for many years, still remain important in treatment. Some of them are cultivated to be used for pharmaceutical industry. Tropolone alkaloids content of the species help in the treatment of FMF, gout, amyloidosis, cirrhosis, Behcet's disease, psoriasis, Hodgkin lymphoma, myeloid leukemia and skin cancers. An economic and efficient synthesis method of Colchicum alkaloids haven't found yet, that's why colchicine and other alkaloids are obtained from plant source by extraction. The wide variety of Colchicum species in Turkey lead the researchers to investigate new sources of Colchicum rich in tropolone alkaloids. In our department, Colchicum species have been studied for more than 45 years and the contents and biological activities of the Colchicum species growing in our country are continuing to be studied today. This review was performed to summarize the investigations on Colchicum species in the world and to emphasize its importance in Turkey.more...

Monitoring Serum HER-2 to Help Manage Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients The HER-2 ELISA is a simple, non-invasive blood test that can be used as a clinical tool for monitoring and managing patients with MBC when used in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures. When serum values are equal to or greater than 15 ng/mL, the test can be used to monitor a patient’s HER-2 status. The increase or decrease in serum HER-2 levels have been shown to parallel the clinical course of disease regardless of a patient’s treatment regimen [6-8]. As shown in Figure 1 and 2 increasing levels in serum can reflect disease progression while decreasing levels can reflect treatment response or stable disease [8-17]. Monitoring the changes of serum HER-2 levels can help manage treatment of MBC patients. A normal serum HER-2 level is less than 15ng/ml and an elevated level ( above normal) is 15 ng/ml or greater. The serum HER-2 ELISA test is for use in the follow-up and monitoring of MBC patients whose first serum HER-2 blood test is equal to or above 15ng/ml. When the first blood level is elevated, physicians can begin monitoring the HER-2 level routinely. Each time a HER-2 blood level is tested, the result will be compared to the last test result. In our clinical study, an increase of 20% or greater from the previous visit was reflective of disease progression. If the change was less than a 20% increase from the previous visit it was reflective of a lack of disease progression during therapy. Physicians can use this information, together with other clinical tests, to manage patient treatment.more...
